Using The Wandering Nature Of The Mind To Your Advantage – Like Dumbbells At The Gym.

So then, what is the advantage of having a mind that wanders constantly?
.
If you are a practitioner of meditation, you will know that a wandering mind is like the weight of a dumbbell at the gym. Each time the mind wanders off and you realise, the action of bringing your focus back to your breath is like lifting a rep at the gym.
.
Therefore, a wandering mind can be seen as an opportunity, rather than a curse. With a wandering mind, we are constantly gifted with the opportunity to notice our distraction and return back to the present moment – each time we do this, our mindful muscle becomes stronger.
.
There is a misconception when it comes to mindfulness. Yes, you must sit with your eyes shut in a quiet spot when you are training the mind, however this is not the only method of mindfulness. You do not have to meditate to be mindful.
.
To be mindful means to be aware and focused. Think of those mundane tasks that you are confronted with on a daily basis. Shift your focus away from your mind and listen to the sounds, touch with your hands, smell with your nose and observe what you see. Use your sense to focus on things and make sure to bring your attention to those things.
.
This is better than a constantly wandering mind, isn’t it? There is no question about it. Studies show that when you are lost in thought, you experience a sense of unhappiness. When you are focused in on a task or in the ‘present’, there are thoughts and feelings occurring, however they cease to be your main focus.
.
When stressed out thoughts and agitating feelings of frustration or worry cease to be the main object of your awareness, what sort of impact do you think this has on your experience in life?
.
Let’s not go any further with this. I will let you ponder on it, for yourself. These aren’t lessons that can be learned from scripts or books or amateur advocates, like myself.
.
Don’t believe a word I say, ever – Go out and find out for yourself. These are lessons that must be learned on an experiential level. Therefore, it is up to you to go out and put these things in to practice.
