What are some ways in which we can achieve happiness?

Studies show that when you perform acts of generosity, this releases a concoction of chemicals that result in you feeling happy. It said that another way in which we can invoke a sense happiness is through forgiveness. When you let go of something that you have been holding on to and you forgive that person genuinely, your brain releases feel good chemicals that lead to states of happiness and bliss.

One of the main ways in which we can enter states of bliss is by showing gratitude. You hear this term a lot these days, but what does it actually mean and what is the most effective way in which we can show it?

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful for someone or something. It involves a readiness and a willingness to show appreciation and kindness in return. That’s great, but we need to get practical in order for this to have any positive, lasting effect.

The most effective way in which you can show gratitude is when you are seated in silence with no distractions like phones or computers or other people. To show gratitude involves a certain process of thought, so the more you practice it, the better you become with doing it effectively.

Visualising is an important aspect of this thought process, as is your level of specificity. The more detailed and specific you can get, the better. The thought process involves thinking up something that you are genuinely appreciative for in your life that no one else necessarily has. An ineffective way of showing gratitude is to say “I am grateful for oxygen because it helps me breathe”. This is ineffective because everyone has oxygen to breathe. You must choose something that is going your way, specifically.

Its no secret that when you think in this way, even if its just for a few seconds of thinking and visualising and showing gratitude where you feel genuinely happy and satisfied with your life. Although these feelings don’t necessarily stick around that long because your mind wanders off to other things, making a habit of these thought processes is a way in which you condition the mind and body into feeling these states more often.

The priming and conditioning of the mind and body involves rigorous, disciplined, repetitive and monotonous work, however when you play the long term game and you consider that each time you show gratitude you are tuning your body and mind into feeling gratitude more and more is satisfying. Just that 1% more each day, it goes a long way after one month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year.
